The Municipality of Agutaya and The Andres Soriano Foundation jointly conducted coastal cleanup and mangrove planting activities to celebrate special events in September and contribute towards the protection and conservation of the environment.
Community volunteers marked the International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 21 by collecting trash and debris along the coastal shores of Agutaya Mainland in Palawan, with the active participation of the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, and Barangays Abagat, Bangcal, Cambian, Villa Fria, and Villa Sol. The International Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrated every third Sunday of September “to remind and reawaken our people for vigilance in support for the continuing crusade against the debris crises all over the world – a united front for all citizens of the world to keep Mother Earth clean.” (Presidential Proclamation No. 470 s. 2003)
On September 25, as part of the 119th Civil Service anniversary celebration, approximately 3,000 propagules of mangroves were planted at Sitio Bulwa in Barangay Villa Sol, Agutaya with the support of the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police, Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, and Barangay Council of Villa Sol. Mangrove regeneration continues to be a top priority for this marine protected area, as mangroves host a spectacular diversity of flora and fauna, provide forest products and sustain fisheries, protect coastline from erosion and extreme weather events, contribute to water quality, and help fight climate change.
