School-based Supplementary Feeding Program in Manamoc

Back

Manamoc Elementary School and The Andres Soriano Foundation continue to jointly implement a school-based supplementary feeding program for malnourished children in Barangay Manamoc in Cuyo, Palawan.

At the start of this school year, 25 children were identified as malnourished, with 22 having been assessed as wasted and 3 as severely wasted. Wasting, or low weight-for-height, is usually a result of significant food shortage and/or disease. To alleviate hunger and address the nutritional needs of these children, parents and teachers work together to prepare nutritious meals which are served in school every morning. Campaigns are also implemented to increase awareness of the community on the importance of proper nutrition and to improve their capacity to grow vegetables at home and prepare nutritious and affordable meals for the entire family.

These activities are key components of the Foundation’s ongoing health program which facilitates the delivery of basic health and nutrition services to geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities, reaching the most vulnerable groups including pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
