Barangay Diit has a community of empowered women. Through the initiative of The Andres Soriano Foundation, Inc., these women were organized into the Diit Weavers Association of Brgy. Diit, Agutaya, Palawan. Using buri and pandan, these women weave hats, bags, picnic boxes, and other handicrafts. While they have different interesting stories of how they keep on improving their weaving skills, they have the same deep appreciation of how this enterprise effectively helps them augment their family income.
“The additional income from this livelihood program not only helps in the daily needs of the family, said Mrs. Raides Abus who is the President of the Association. It also helps secure a good future for her children because they use the additional earning augment the expenses in the education of her children. Mrs. Abus expressed gratitude to ASF for the opportunity to be one of the weavers.”– Raides Abus, President
ASF’s livelihood program is also an opportunity for Ms. Rubelyn Abus to earn, given that she has a physical disability. The opportunity makes her shine as a handicrafts weaver even with disability. The earnings also help in their family’s day-to-day needs.
Nanay Neria Cabanero is one of the picnic box weavers. She takes pride in being able to work even now that she is a senior citizen. Her earnings from weaving picnic boxes secure her daily needs. “I am able to buy rice, coffee, sugar, medicines, and other needs from my income. Thay is why I am thankful to ASF for this blessing.” — Neria Cabanero, Member
