TB Congress in Concepcion

Back

Ninety-nine (99) participants joined the TB Congress held on October 11 in the island barangay of Concepcion in Agutaya, Palawan. This campaign was conducted by the Municipal Health Office of Agutaya, with support from The Andres Soriano Foundation, to raise community awareness and build the capacity of health workers and volunteers on TB prevention, detection, and treatment.

Tuberculosis or TB is caused by bacteria (mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most often affect the lungs. Common symptoms of active lung TB are cough with sputum and blood, chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. TB is spread primarily from person to person through infected air during close contact. The bacteria get into the air when someone infected with lung TB coughs, sneezes, shouts, or spits. A person can become infected when s/he inhales minute particles of the infected sputum from the air. It is not possible to get TB just by touching the clothes or shaking the hand of someone who is infected. TB is a treatable and curable disease. It takes at least 6-8 months to completely treat the disease. It is very important that the patient takes all the prescribed drugs for the recommended duration. (World Health Organization)

Supporting this TB-free campaign is part of the Foundation’s ongoing health program which facilitates the delivery of basic health services to geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities, reaching the most vulnerable groups including pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
